Where these ranges come from
General healthy adult: 0.8 g/kg/day protein (RDA), calories from a standard activity-adjusted estimate.
Diabetes: protein need is similar to a healthy adult absent kidney complications; focus is usually on carbohydrate quality and calorie balance.
CKD without dialysis: protein is typically restricted to slow progression; CKD on dialysis needs more protein to offset losses during treatment.
Liver disease: older advice restricted protein, but current guidance favors higher protein to prevent muscle loss, taken in smaller frequent meals.
Cancer, post-surgery, and sarcopenia: higher protein supports tissue repair and helps preserve muscle mass during stress or recovery.
Weight management: a calorie deficit is paired with relatively higher protein to protect lean mass while losing fat.
